While Steve McQueen may not have the same impressive track record of famous movies as the other entries on this list, he more than makes up for it with his quiet, yet intense demeanor which helped establish him as one of the great anti-heroes of the 1960s.  He would become one of the quintessential tough guys during the Hollywood New Wave.  In his private life he was a huge fan of racing motorcycles and cars, going so far as to do much of his own driving stunt work in his films.  His passion for racing and cars would help him for his roles in The Great Escape, The Getaway, and Bullitt.  A prolific drug user, McQueen challenged the stoner stereotype by maintaining a strict exercise routine which included learning the martial art Tang Soo Do.  But McQueen did have a soft side: he made frequent visits to the Boy’s Republic reformatory school where he would encourage and spend time with the displaced children.
