The superhero's translation to the videogame has been rocky at best. Remember Superman 64? Yuck. However, there have been some stand out titles.
Here are the top ten superhero video games, most of which contain the X-Men or Spiderman.
only one word can describe this game: EPIC
Okay, so you knew that was coming right? The Dark Knight, or any DC character, has never seen a better game than this one.
Flying around with grappling hooks, watching a hoodlum's heart-rate skyrocket as you close in for a sneak attack or searching for The Riddler's secrets scattered among the ruins of a creepy asylum make this game true to the Batman that audiences are familiar with.
The graphics are crisp and clear and the mood is dirty and dreary. The freeflow combat system allows players to fluidly fight a whole gang of baddies flawlessly.
Rounding out the many great qualities of this game is the cast of voice actors including Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy from Batman: The Animated Series.
The Arcade version of the failed X-Men cartoon pilot X-Men: Pryde of The X-Men lasted much longer then the cartoon itself having been recently released in an HD version in October 2010 for Xbox Live and the PlayStation Network.
The classic X-Men story is the focus of this game; Magneto is the villain along with his lackeys The White Queen, Juggernaut, Mystique, Pyro and The Blob.
Inadvertent mistakes in the dialogue including "welcome to die" and Magneto referring to himself as the "master of magnet" somehow don't affect the game adversely and only add to its value.
For the time of its release this game seemingly had three dimensions including up and down movement in addition to left and right.
The classic X-Men line up and iconic costumes and settings make this game a nostalgic experience for any comic fan.
The Amazing Spider-Man vs. The Kingpin is the wallcrawler's first appearance on the Sega Genesis system and probably his best, certainly better than Maximum Carnage.
For such an early Sega release the sound and graphics are superior creating faithful representations of Spider-Man villains including Doctor Octopus, Sandman, The Lizard, Green Goblin, Vulture and Venom.
An interesting mechanic in the game is the ability to photograph villains and sell the pictures to The Daily Bugle for money, which can be used to buy more web fluid. A "nightmare" difficulty was included that was extraordinarily difficult and increased the replay value of the game.
The game was immensely popular and was owned by two-thirds of Sega owners.
The video game version of Sam Raimi's genius film is equally genius. This game broke Spider-Man out of two dimensions and into the modern world of sandbox gaming.
The size and realism of the Manhattan that this game is amazing and the web-slinging mechanic is groundbreaking. For the first time in game history Spidey could web sling not only in a straight line but also in an infinite number of curves.
A wide variety of crimes and emergencies to respond make the game continually exciting between storylines including Doctor Octopus, Rhino and Mysterio.
The film cast lends their voices to the game and are joined by John DiMaggio, better known as Bender in Futurama.
Spider-Man 2 created an experience that made a player feel like Spider-Man, setting the stage for Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions.
Spider-man: Shattered Dimensions took the wall crawler out of the open world play of Spider-man 2 but did not loose any dynamism in the process.
Wonderfully imaginative alternate storylines of the web-slinger's universe are portrayed, each with its own characters and abilities. Film Noir, Futuristic, Amazing and Ultimate universe Spider-men each have a unique skill set fitting for their surroundings. For example Noir Spider-man must be stealthy whereas Spiderman 2099 can fly with jet packs, etc.
The story is slightly shaky but excusable considering the extreme playability of the game. Spider-man's web slinging has never felt more natural to control. Shattered Dimensions has something for Spidey fans and all gamers alike.
If you haven't played Marvel vs. Capcom 2 stop everything now and find a copy. A candidate for the greatest fighting game of all time, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 combines a gigantic roster of characters from both companies, a hand drawn style and lightning fast play to create a sizzling experience.
The choice of using three player teams was a wise one, letting players create their own dream team of characters. 28 characters appear from each company, including a large amount of X-Men, Captain America, Doctor Doom, Iron Man, Magneto, and Spiderman. Seemingly random characters include Blackheart, Shuma-Gorath, and most puzzlingly Thanos, who by all accounts should be able to easily destroy any enemy.
The Capcom roster includes Mega Man, Jill Valentine and a number of Street Fighter and Darkstalkers characters.
The promise of a plot in Marvel vs. Capcom 3 was a huge let down, comparatively its predecessor was much more charming in its acceptance of its novelty value and purely fun attitude.
Infamous took the "real life" feel of films such as Batman Begins and X-Men and translated it into a video game perfectly. The plot is rationed out in such a way that a player turns into a superhero or supervillain without even realizing it.
Players assume the role of bike messenger Cole MacGrath, a survivor of an explosion caused by a device called the Ray Sphere. Emerging from the rubble with newly gain electrical powers Cole must choose between using his powers for good of evil as he explores the burned urban landscape.
Experience points and power leveling are gradual and well paced allowing a player to slip fully into the role of Cole and experience his growth.
Comic book style cut scenes and great graphics make this game a must play.
Using the story trope of a gigantic, earth-shattering event that causes heroes and villains to unite, X-Men Legends 2: The Rise of Apocalypse outshines its predecessor and even Marvel Ultimate Alliance. A story as grand as the tale of Apocalypse could easily become too big and incomprehensible in the format of a video game but X-Men Legends 2 remains clear and concise.
After Xavier is kidnapped The X-Men and The Brotherhood join forces, allowing players to combine good and evil mutants into one team. Who hasn't wanted to be in control of Magneto in a game?
Other characters include Bishop, Juggernaut, Scarlet Witch, Sunfire and Toad. Unlockable and exclusive characters include Deadpool, Iron Man, Professor X, Cable, Dark Phoenix and X-Man. Powers are upgraded using experience points creating the feel of an RPG.
The Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction along with Spiderman 2 did for superhero games what Grand Theft Auto did for racing games. An entirely different approach from vintage side scrollers and poorly executed early attempts at 3-dimensional games, such as Superman 64,Ultimate Destruction let players bound around like The Hulk should.
The unstoppable monster can crawl walls and jump extreme heights and distances. The game takes place in an open world environment and wandering the landscape is just as fun as battling opponents. Classic Hulk combat moves, such as smashing and throwing cars, are equally at home in this game.
Neal McDonough reprises his role as Bruce Banner from the 1996 animated series.
